"Warm in Winter; Cool in Summer," an international exhibition of wearables was installed in the magnificent Institute of Applied Arts in Pest. With its green and gold tiled roof and bright white Moorish interior the building itself was worth the trip!

World Meeting of Felt Art
at Lakitelek, in the country south of Budapest

We had six days of classes, exhibits, slide shows, Hungarian dancing, singing, a fashion show and more! I particularly loved the yurt village.

Left, above is the very large and magnificent yurt made by the Hungarian feltmakers' guild. As many as 40 people could be seated inside. My favorite was less traditional, center and right, above. Its sides consisted of a several richly decorated panels joined in a single continuous piece.

The delegation from Kyrgyzstan showed us how to take down, move and put up a yurt.

I studied Kyrgyz crafts. On the left we are making samples of shirdak, a Central Asian carpet made in layers of felt, elaborately stitched together. On the right is chiij, matting made of reeds wrapped with colored wool and woven together.

Making alakiiz, a traditional carpet, wet-felted and rolled.

Festival of Folk Arts in Budapest

The festival featured felt art. A yurt village erected on the grounds of Buda Castle was the site of exhibits and ongoing demonstrations of felt-making and related crafts.

Left, Buda Castle is in the background as the yurt village is put in place. Right, a view of the festival and the Danube from the Castle grounds.
